Our Instructors

Technical Advisor: Sensei Hidetaka Abe
Sensei Hidetaka Abe is a seventh degree black belt in karate and a
second degree black belt in judo. He has been studying martial arts
since he was 13 years old, and at Meiji University in Tokyo, he
studied Karate under Master Ohtsuka. While there, he was co-captain of
the 1965 All-Japan Collegiate Championship team. In 1967, after he
graduated from college and coached a year at Meiji, he came to
Berkeley and began teaching the UC Karate Club. He continues to do so today.
Head Instructor: Judy Harte
Judy is fifth degree black belt in karate and has been
training for many years at the UC Berkeley Karate Club, as well as in
Sensei Abe's private dojo.
Assistant Instructors
Leonard C. Baltz
Leonard is a second degree black belt who has been training for fourteen years, and
teaching for four.
Petrice Kam
Petrice is a second degree black belt who has been training for eleven years.
Eugene Malikin
Eugene is a second degree black belt who has been training for eleven years.

In addition to the regular instructors listed above, the
UC Berkeley Karate Club has over seven other black belts who come
regularly and teach. On occasion the club has special guests from
Japan who visit and hold special training sessions. The club also has
a large group of senior black belts who stop by on occasion to teach class.
